The first road race of the year has come and gone. I signed up for the P,1,2,3 category for no other reason than to get more miles for the same amount of money. The race was 2 laps at about 31 miles each. The field was large holding about 75 riders. My only real goal was to stay with the peleton and not get dropped. When the race started we quickly reached a tempo of about 22 to 25 on flat ground. It stayed like this for the first couple of miles untill we came to the second right hander and caught our first tail wind. From that point I only caught a glemps of my computer a couple times but it was in the low 30's each time. The pace stayed this way for some time and I began to second guess my decision to race this class... these dudes werent fuckin around. My legs were starting to hurt from the pace that was being set. This was by far the hardest effort I have put in this year. I was telling to my self to breath and to stick with it. Come on, come on, come on.... please let up. It did. Whoa. I almost just go dropped. I spun my legs for a few seconds to flush some acid out of them. It was calm enough to look over my shoulder to see how many guys were behind me. When I looked all I saw was the grill of a big red dodge truck. Luckily that was the wheel truck. It was apparent that several guys have been popped off the back during that hard effort and I was probably next. We came into another little bend and off we were again. The cross winds this time were brutal. I felt like I was leaning into the wind and there was no where to get away from it. We were single file and ON the yellow line being pushed there by the wind. Legs on fire, riding in the red at 30 mph.... I got shelled, it was too much. I made it 19 miles in the P,1,2,3 race before getting dropped. Shit...Oh well. I kinda just crept along making my way back to the pit picking up about 7 or 8 other guys who had also been dropped along the way. My day was over. Kinda bumed a little but not at all worried about it. Its early in the year and I have a long way to go.
Holla atcha boy....
