Went north this years since the Mo state race went west. Figured if I was going to drive 5 hours might as well stay in my own state. Man was it worth the 5 hour drive...
Driving up Friday night we hit some pretty serious snow. 4 to 5 inches reported on the ground south of Chicago. Made it up with out any problems but did not get downtown until about 2 AM. No biggie. Saturday I met up with my cousin Devin and some of the other Wild Trak crew and walked around alittle, ate a lot of good food, and drank quite a bit of good beer. Pretty good day. I really wasn't worried about the race. With my fitness below par I was here for a good time and not much more. Hopefully next year I will be in better shape physically, and mentally.
Sunday we got to the course a little later than I wanted so I was kind of rushed getting my number and getting going on the bike. About 45 minutes before the race I went to look for a spot to hop in the course and get some pre-riding in. Problem was, the races were so big that it was nearly impossible to do this with out messing up racers already on the course. So I stayed off and rode around the outside of it as much as I could to see what I could see. There was a very defined line that had worn in to the 3+ inches of snow on the course. It was obvious that that was the only line worth taking so I knew I wouldn't have to think about line selection to much. So that was good. The only other problem was guessing tire pressure. I had no clue how slick the course was or how bumpy either. My first lap of the race would be my first on course. Great.
Sitting in the pack waiting for call ups to get going I am thinking to my self how shitty the first lap will be in the pack not knowing what or where the fuck I am going. Also not knowing how slick the course was, meant I also didn't know how hard I could push into or out of corners. Super great.
They finally call the first rider up. Don't recall his name. Then they called me up. "
Scott Peipert from our southern region in Alton, Il". WTF? Front row start with second call up. Not sure why I got that but I wasn't going to ask either. For some reason I have a higher crossresults.com ranking than the other riders. Don't know how that happened but the results are out there and I do have a couple upgrade points.

So now I'm thinking, great, Here I am on the front row of a 85 rider deep frozen cross race and I haven't ridden 1 fucking lap of the course yet. I was just hoping I didn't look like a idiot and not totally do my call up no justice.
When they finally blew the whistle I thought about really going for it. But I opted for the safer option of holding back and following wheels. It became clear to me very early that getting off the single track line completely wrecked your momentum. I was maybe 6th or 7th wheel going through he first few corners but riders were being pretty aggressive trying to get to the front. Still not knowing how hard I could go there wasn't much I could do.
After a couple laps and only one crash I found myself in the mid teens position wise and I was starting to feel like I had the course mostly figured out. I was able to start going a little faster and a little harder through corners with out getting off the single track line. I was concentrating so much that the first time I remembered to look at the lap card it was 2 to go. This was good actually because the race went by pretty fast for me and that meant I could really go hard for the last two.
With one to go I was starting to reel in the rider in front of me. But the rider behind me was starting to gain ground on me as well. Just had to stay focused and smooth for the last lap. Nearing the end of the last lap the gaps were pretty tight. 4 or 5 seconds to the rider in front of me, 4 or 5 to the rider behind. We were all going pretty good and it stayed this way through the finish.
I ended up 17th out of roughly 85 riders. I think I could have done better had I known the course but also think I could have done much worse considering I didn't.
That call up was my race. No way I could have finished that far up starting in the back in snow. It was hard to pass and was actually hard to get passed because the riders were always sketched out coming by running into you. Not a big deal, just had to ride cautiously.
Justin on our team finished 25th in the 4A race which is great for him.
The Chicago cross scene is awesome. Very similar to the STL scene(which is also awesome) only bigger. Much bigger. There were 565 starters this weekend which was there biggest race to date. It was crazy for me to see with 100 racers on a course at one time. The most I have seen before this was about 45 for one race. AWESOME!!
Man I cant wait for cross next year....
...how many days
